Why are Primers so Important for Mature Skin?
Back in 2013, 65 year old makeup artist and Look Fabulous Forever founder Tricia Cusden was struggling to find beauty products which worked for her mature skin. She felt ignored by beauty retailers, and endeavoured to launch her own makeup and skincare range which understood the needs of older women and celebrated the beauty of the ageing process.
“A good primer acts as the perfect canvas for your makeup, whether you have large pores, an uneven surface texture, or lines around your lips. Yet few women who come along to my makeovers have ever heard of primers.
So when I was planning products for our range I knew it was essential we create the best primer for mature skin. In fact, so essential, we made 3 of them.”
- Tricia Cusden, Founder of Look Fabulous Forever
Why Are Primers So Important for Mature Skin?
As we get older, our skin can really benefit from a little helping hand between our skincare routine and our makeup application. It’s an extra step that we may not have taken in our thirties, but as skin ages it can become dry, uneven and porous. The role of a perfecting primer is therefore to fill pores, plump up fine lines, and to create a smooth canvas for your makeup to glide effortlessly onto.
So if you find that your foundation clings to dry patches, your eyeshadow migrates around your eyelid, or your lipstick bleeds into lip lines, then read on to discover the tried and tested benefits of each of our bestselling primers...
The Benefits of Our Face Prime
Whether you have dry skin, oily skin, or sensitive skin, our Smooth Like Silk Face Prime will work for you. Suited to all skin types, our oil free face primer uses aloe vera and silica to fill visible pores and lines. This gives the skin a boost of youthful elasticity and fullness, as well as promoting the coveted ‘blurred effect’ when you apply your foundation and powders.
The best thing about Smooth Like Silk Face Prime, however, is the visible effect it will have on your makeup’s longevity. As we get older, our natural collagen production slows down and the texture of our skin becomes looser, rougher, and more absorbent. And while we accept the beauty of the ageing process, it can be a little annoying when it prevents our makeup from staying put for more than an hour or two!
The job of a makeup primer, then, is to create an undetectable barrier between the natural skin’s surface and the makeup we put onto it. Smooth Like Silk Face Prime is a matte formula which hydrates the skin underneath as it creates a perfectly textured surface which your makeup will want to stick to. That’s why our customers return to this product over and over: it’s a best kept secret for perfect makeup that lasts all day!
How To Apply:
Step 1: Always prep your skin with a hydrating moisturiser, such as our Smooth the Day Face Cream
Step 2 Option 1: Allow around 10 minutes for your skincare to sink in, then, if you have ample time, apply a generous pump of Smooth Like Silk Face Prime over your whole face using your fingertips. Leave for 5 minutes, perhaps whilst you do your eye makeup, then evenly apply your Continuous Cover Foundation with a Foundation Brush 3.
Step 2 Option 2: If you’re pressed for time, you can always mix one pump of Smooth Like Silk Face Prime with your Continuous Cover Foundation on the back of your hand. Swirl them together with the Foundation Brush 3 and apply evenly to your face.
The Benefits of Our Eye Prime
Delicate skin around the eyes can be one of our biggest indicators of ageing, often developing deep lines, hooded lids and a crepe-paper-like texture. For many women, the thought of applying a bold or defining eyeshadow to this kind of skin is very daunting.
It may seem as though powder shadows will simply sit in our wrinkles, while creamy formulas like our Sheer Brilliance Lid Colour feel apt to move around and look uneven. And nobody wants to look in the mirror to see their lash liner stamped into the crease of their lid!
Thankfully, all of these problems can be avoided by prepping the eyes with a layer of our Smooth Out Eye Prime. It works to gloss over any blemishes and fine lines, creating the ultimate base for your eye makeup look. The creamy formula emulates that all important ‘smooth skin’ texture that will keep powdery shadows from migrating across the eye.
This light reflective primer also contains a bright pigment to even the skin tone on your eyelids and to boost the colour of any shadows you subsequently apply. It contains neutralising properties to reduce natural discolouration from the skin below whilst giving the colour you apply a chance to pop!
How To Apply
Step 1: Ensure your eyelids are cleaned and moisturised, for example using our Smooth the Day Face Cream
Step 2: Apply a very small amount of Smooth Out Eye Prime directly to your eyelids using the integrated sponge
Step 3: Use a Concealer Brush 4 to spread the primer evenly over the eyelid area and work upwards into the socket line. Allow to fully absorb for 5 minutes before applying eyeshadow.
The Benefits of Our Lip Prime:
One of our founder Tricia’s most lamented makeup problems was the feathered lip line. When you invest in a gorgeous, bright lipstick to liven up your look, but it all bleeds into the lines around your mouth and makes you look ‘messy’. That’s why she created our Never Feather Lip Prime to do all lipstick justice!
Key ingredient Sodium Hyaluronate (a derivative of hyaluronic acid) works to fill fine lines around the lips, and ‘seals’ edges to create a crisp outer line. By applying around the border of your lips, our Never Feather Lip Prime dries to a matte finish which fully defines your natural lip line.
How To Apply:
Step 2: Using the sponge applicator, apply Never Feather Lip Prime all around the edges of your lips. You want the boundary between your lip and the skin around it to be covered.
Step 3: Gently pat the primer into your skin with your finger and leave for 5 minutes to absorb
Step 4: using a clean cotton swab, ensure your lips are free of any lip prime
