Cleanse your face and wait 15 minutes to allow your skin to settle. Use a mirror in natural light to determine what neutral shades are your most flattering by holding a white fabric or sheet of paper to your face.
Look better in bright whites. Your skin will appear rosy, pink or blue-ish red.
Look better in ivory and off-whites. Your skin will appear yellow or sallow against white.
Your skin tone, also called undertone, is different from your complexion, which is the shade of your skin (light, medium, dark). Your undertone will remain the same no matter how much sun you get, even if you’re pale in the winter and tan in the summer. It also doesn’t change if your hair goes grey. Most skin is either warm-toned or cool-toned.
Warm toned skin has a yellow undertone and is often described as Spring or Autumn. You will look best in cream, brown, warm green, navy blue, coral pink, orange or scarlet. Cool toned skin has a blue undertone and is often described as Summer or Winter. You will look best in pure white, grey, icy blue, fuchsia, navy, purple and cherry red. These are colour choices both for clothes and for makeup.
If you are still undecided when answering these questions, you may have a neutral skin tone. This is particularly true if you have an olive tone to your skin and you will typically look best in our warmer shades.
