Is 50 the new 35?

Emma Thompson has always been prepared to speak her mind. When asked if 50 is the new 35 in an interview in the Guardian Weekend magazine, the 55-year-old actress replies:

"Can I just say very loudly, bollocks. Not to recognise getting older for what it is...I do think the infantilisation of our generation is one of the human issues of our time. people wanting to be 35 when they're 50 makes me think: why? Why don't you be 50 and be good at that?"

I think that what Emma is having a go at here is the pressure on women not only to look younger but to want to look younger.

I was very reassured when I read some research published by Dr Carolyn Mair, a psychologist at the London College of Fashion showing that €œwomen want to look good despite media pressure to look young.€ Anna and I met Carolyn last week and we are going to work with her on some research of our own in the near future. Watch this space we are very excited about this because we are hoping to research how older women feel about a range of issues.

Here are some of the things that the women said in Carolyn€'™s research:

  • "I care about how I look and about being attractive. I don’€™t care about looking younger than I am. I suppose I feel quite comfortable, I feel very happy in my Sixties, probably more so than at any other time in my life.€"
  • "€œI would say I want to look good for my age€...; I’€™m not afraid of getting old. I€™’m just happy to be as I am, and I just want to look nice as I am and if someone thinks that I look younger than I am, that€™’s fine€..."
  • "I just want to look as good as I can for as long as I can€... I don’€™t want to look young because you can’t. I think I want to look as good as I can.€"

But there were those who felt differently: €

  • "I want to look young€... looking good for my age is not good enough for me to be honest with you€...I don’€™t want to look 62.€"

At LFF we all about looking good!

We know that our makeup makes you feel great because we get lots of lovely feedback (the latest yesterday from Marilyn in Australia who said our Continuous Cover Foundation was the best foundation she had ever used). So if you are firmly in the €œI want to look as good (fabulous!) as I can€ group then you have come to the right place!

We have been inundated with comments about this on our Facebook page - do take a look and add your thoughts or leave your comments below. We love to read them. What response would you have given to the researcher's question: €œ

Do you want to look younger or good for your age?€
