I was very interested to read your blog of the 25 November - Make up and the older Woman . About a month ago I visited a well known department store just to have a look around , as I travelled through the store something struck me , it appeared that all the clothing bill boards or posters were all of younger women certainly no one over 50 years old. (All the mannequins were the same no characteristics that made them stand out as young or old- so for me this wasn’t a problem) . The irony of this is that when I ventured into the cafe area I would say 90% of the customers appeared on the day I visited were over 50 years of age . I may have missed a poster showing an older person but I really don’t think so . To top it all I also went into a well known store with many makeup counters - again none that I could see had posters of older women which would encourage more of us to visit. I think it is lovely that younger women and men are visible in merchandising but what about the older women and men out there.

Tricia, Thank you for your wonderful blogs, you are such a good writer and so wise and interesting. I look forward so much to reading them and love it when I’ve missed one to catch up on! Recently I was staying in The Midland Hotel in Manchester where I was born, a rare visit as I live in London. My husband, still working at 73, was at a conference there. I was just getting ready slowly one morning, heading for a visit to the wonderful RHS Bridgewater, enjoying a leisurely start to the day. Suddenly there was a loud alarm sound, a fire alarm. Help! I grabbed my make up bag, not my handbag, my door key or even my shoes. I ran down the fire escape stairs in bare feet with wet hair. I found myself outside a side door a few steps up from the busy street. I undid my makeup bag, got out a small mirror and laid out my make up on a stone balustrade while I put it on. I was ready to face the day and the other guests. I wore makeup every day of lockdown times, just for myself. At 73 I find it even more important than when I was young to add colour to my faded face and look my best. It’s empowering and fun!

I am currently stuck at home with a broken ankle. Just horrid. I am putting my make up on every day to face the world and my visitors. It is keeping me going. I have even ordered up more lipstick.

There was a survey of Saga clients in the November magazine which has very similar results, although the Saga beauty expert doesn’t seem to have heard of LFF.

I emailed Saga re this saying the article had not been researched enough as they never mentioned LFF.
