Hi Tricia - I completely agree with your comments it is important for a woman to take an active interest in the household finances. I remember the times in the seventies and also like you I had to buy my own house and luckily had an understanding mortgage adviser. My energy supplier is Octopus and I now keep a watchful eye on my energy usage! X

Hi everyone, For years I was an ostrich and never quite got to grips with the concept of living within my means. Needless to say I got myself into all sorts of financial difficulties. When I met my husband he was horrified at the debt I had racked up and made it plain that there would be no more debt and if I/we couldn’t afford something it would have to wait until we could (same ethos as my parents, so I don’t know where my profligacy came from!). Being a finance guy he helped me put a plan together to clear my debt (out of my own salary) and it turned out to be something that would stand me in good stead for the future. As he is older than me (and convinced that he will pop his clogs before I do) together we have mapped out and budgeted for every conceivable circumstance that we can think of. These financial scenarios are updated regularly so I know exactly where I will stand when I am on my own and I am fully involved in all other financial planning and decisions. I never thought I would enjoy it so much but realise how essential it is to be aware of and in control of ones finances. No more sand for me.

I do so agree with what you said. I found my old diary for when my husband and I moved in together and were living in sin to my Mothers horror! I kept all my costs for food for us and 2 cats and 1 dog and it was £19.79 on average per week. I found that difficult . I am like you going through all my finances. I run a B & B and all ways had a star rating of 4 stars. which cost around several hundred pounds per year. I kept this for 13 years. During Covid Visit England who run this would not give me a discount even though I was closed for 2 years by Law. Also Denplan would not give a discount or refund when we had not seen a dentist. I cancelled both and have saved myself £1,777.00 per year. My guests have assured me that they find me on the webb, and younger guests have never heard of star system. So check all your direct debits, find out what is coming in and try and get rid of anything that you do not need going out. Also I have started to cook each night to get the most out of food I buy and I have got out Delia cook book on Frugal living . Also try to cook2 meals when you put on the oven. We will get through this and life will be better just have to weather the storm. We women are very good at make do and mend and being creative when it comes to sorting things out.
