Why Does Mature Skin Need Translucent Powder?

Back in 2013, 65-year-old makeup artist and Look Fabulous Forever founder Tricia Cusden was struggling to find beauty products which worked for her mature skin. She felt ignored by beauty retailers, and endeavoured to launch her own makeup and skincare range which understood the needs of older women and celebrated the beauty of the ageing process.

What is a Translucent Pressed Powder?

Many women will use a pressed, pigmented powder either alongside their liquid foundation or in place of it. But as we get older, the days of a skin-coloured compact powder, complete with mirror and puff are better left behind us. Cakey, dense and far too matte: foundation face powders can look very unflattering on mature skin. But the question remains, how do we set our liquid foundation?

Enter translucent powder! A makeup artist’s best-kept secret, a pressed translucent powder will serve to lock in liquid foundation and prevent it from moving, whilst remaining light, bright and undetectable. A sweep of a good translucent powder over the whole face using a kabuki brush will blur pores, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and create a soft focus finish for your makeup look.

And why a pressed powder? Simply put, they’re easier to control and apply, and far less messy than loose powders!

The Benefits of Translucent Powder for Mature Skin

It sets your makeup

While a powder foundation may work well for women with very oily skin, mature faces are generally on the drier side. So a dense, pigmented powder will cling to dry patches and go on unevenly.

However, simply using a liquid base, such as our Continuous Cover Foundation, can leave the makeup prone to moving around. It also won’t last as long as if it’s ‘set’ with a matte finish powder. So whatever your skin type, it’s important to use a winning combination of wet and dry products when applying face makeup.

Our beauty experts recommend you finish off any liquid or cream base with a good sweep of Perfect Finish Translucent Powder. This finely milled, pressed powder gives a very light coverage of matte texture. This will keep your foundation or concealer in place all day long, and create the perfect base to blend in your bronzer and blush. In fact, if you’ve ever had difficulty creating a natural, well-blended application of your bronze or blush products, then translucent powder could well be your missing component...

It Creates a Perfect Base for Blending

It’s difficult to get an even, controlled coverage of a powder product, such as our Real Radiance Blush, when you’re trying to buff it into a completely opposite texture i.e. a liquid or cream base. Instead, creating a thin layer of invisible powder on which to build a more contoured look will make a huge difference! You’ll be blending powder into powder, which is easier in application and creates a blurred, flawless finish.

It Reflects Light for a Youthful Look

Finally, a good setting powder will always flatter mature skin because of the light reflecting particles it contains. Unlike pigmented powder foundations, which absorb light and make the face appear flat, translucent powders bounce light back.

The overall effect is light, fresh and full of dimension. Instead of drawing attention to things like age spots, dark circles, or dry skin, a translucent setting powder lightly covers them and reflects light away from the face before it can draw attention to blemishes. Expect a radiant complexion!
