An interesting read. I’ve followed a lot of these healthy life styles for many years, but nothing prepares you for the death of your soulmate. So although I remain healthy physically for my years, many nights when I go to bed I really wish I don’t wake up again let alone live to 100.

An interesting and well researched article. Nothing to disagree with about these various strategies for a very long life, although for me too much self denial of certain pleasures like alcohol and certain foods is not a price worth paying for few extra years.

Dear Tricia I hope my comment isn’t too late - I was too busy yesterday to read your blog. Just wanted to say that, at 94, I’m well on the way to 100. I have several health challenges but still live in my own home with some care and loving family not too far away.people are amazed that my brain still works so well but I have done as much as I could to keep it that way ie exercise (not much these days) plenty of fruit and veg, keeping up with friends (sadly all younger than me now) reading books, creative hobbies, brain training computer apps. Perhaps my own unusual idea is spending a bit of time revising poems from the many I learned at school and had almost lost; also, though maths was always my worst subject, try to keep doing a few sums!

Thank you Tricia, I very much enjoyed today’s blog. Both my mother and grandmother lived to nearly 95 but both were far more inactive than they wanted to be. Not sure about my grandmother but I am sure my mother chose to die when she did. She broke her hip at 90 and again at 94, enough was enough. She still had a clear mind, as did my grandmother, still beat me at scrabble the day before she died. I then thought about if she had been more active she would have lived quite a bit longer. Always thought she would make 100. I intend to keep active for as long as I can, keeping my weight as low as I possibly can, just love chocolate, and enjoy my 4 very young grandsons who certainly keep me fit! and keep my mind busy! Thank you once again, just love your Sunday blog! xx

Both my parents lived to reach their century. My father died 5 years ago at the age of 102 still living at home. My mother died in May this year 2 months short of her 101st birthday. She was in a care home and had Alzheimer’s but thankfully still knew me. Both parents never smoked, drank very little alcohol and led very simple lives. Dad was gardening till his mid 90’s and grew vegetables. Both walked every day, rarely ate processed food and were content with their lives. Perhaps this lifestyle contributed to their longevity. I don’t know how much can be attributed to genetics. Their own parents did not live to reach 80 apart from my maternal grandmother who died at 83. I wonder how many do have both parents who live this long. It’s assumed that I will too. I know that both became frustrated at their ageing bodies unreliability. My father especially as he had been so fit and strong. Dad did get to see and hold his first great grandchild - 100 years separating them.
