Fabulous Street Style #8

25

In the UK we are now properly in a Spring-like mood and this is reflected in our clothes! This month Beatrix Blaise, our photographer, has captured that mood brilliantly in her wonderfully bright and joyful images of stylish older women she has spotted, many of whom have thrown off their heavy winter coats and hats and chosen to wear a rainbow instead! I particularly love Antonia's whole look (see left) which incorporates so many stylish elements which she has pulled together brilliantly using different combinations of warm tones. You will notice how she has co-ordinated her makeup to match and is wearing a blusher, a very similar colour to our Peach Cream Blush and a lipstick that is close to our new Lip Colour in Russet. As she is wearing a very bright and colourful scarf next to her face, she really needs the colour in her cheeks and lips in order not to look washed out. Antonia wouldn't tell Bea her age, so I will leave you to guess!

In this selection we also have several photographs taken in the sunshine with our stylish women wearing some properly funky eyewear! I love the fact that something as simple as a pair of sunglasses or spectacles can inject some chutzpah into an outfit and lift it from ordinary to fun or funky or super cool.  Diane (80, right) really suits the cool toned colours she is wearing and is simply dressed in a dazzling white shirt and plain black trousers. However her choice of bright blue funky glasses are just enough to turn 'safe' into 'special'. She has also balanced the strong frames by wearing makeup in cool tones like our Rosy Glow Blush and Soft Plum Lip Colour. We have a video showing you how to apply eye makeup to look good when you wear glasses.

I do hope you enjoy our Street Style photographs this month. Several made me smile because they are such strong statements of visibility and engagement with fashion to create a signature look. These women all look confident and comfortable in their own skins. They look as though they have given some thought to how they want to be seen and how they see themselves. I know that some of you really struggle with this, so here are my top tips for how to look more stylish and soignée:

  1. Know which colours suit you best and then inject brighter elements of those tones into accessories. See some examples below of  warm and cool tones so that you can get a better idea of how this works in practice. Take a look at our Choosing Colours page if you are unsure and follow the guidelines there.
  2. See style as an 'overall effect.' There are several elements and they all need to work together. Hair, makeup, jewellery, scarves, clothes, tights and shoes. Many women forget how important it is to have colour and definition in the face from face, eye and lip makeup to either balance darker dyed hair or to complement grey or white hair so that you look less 'washed out.'
  3. Think about your body shape and how to make the best of it. For instance Carolyn (70) slims her silhouette by using a contrasting colourful scarf to add a vertical line of bright colour. Without the necklace, scarf, orange bag and red Converse trainers, her loose top and trackie bottoms would look much less interesting.

Women with cool toned skin like Sue, Melanie, Anne and Margaret (below) look good in white, pink, purple, cool blue, blue-reds and acid greens. LFF Makeup to suit them: Eyes - Silver Mist Lid Colour, Soft Grey, Taupe, Aubergine and Charcoal Eye Shades. Blush: Rosy Glow and Lips (from pale to vibrant): Pink Pop, Sweet Pea, Soft Plum, Fuchsia, Cherry Red.

Women with warm toned skin like Sandy, Una, Liane, and Mary look good in the colours cream, rust, brown, warm greens and blues, orange and warm reds. LFF Makeup to suit them: Eyes - Golden Mist Lid Colour, Cream, Soft Olive, Forrest, and Cocoa eye Shades. Blush: Peach Cream and Lips (from pale to vibrant) : Soft Caramel, Rosewood, Soft Coral, Russet, True Coral, Foxy Lady.

As always tell us which styles you really like and also tell us the way you engage with fashion and style - is it with colour, accessories, hairstyle, makeup or all of the above?

So, what do you think ?

So glad I found you and your fabulous blog! We have nothing (to my knowledge) like this in the USA. I am constantly being told by stylists in department stores that everyone should wear yellow based products to "light us up". I always wonder why I look so awful - now I know! I have very fair, freckled Irish skin with pink undertones, not yellow! I may have to move to the UK!

Apart from the positive aura all these ladies exude look at their posture. Everyone is standing upright with shoulders back, no slouching. If health issues allow then good posture knocks years off us.

Everyone looks so fabulous! Liane and Dee are my favorites because those are styles I would choose for myself. You ladies are SO encouraging, merci beaucoup!

Firstly, I agree with Nancy. Nothing in the States is equal to Tricia's products. Tricia, I'm happy you decided to talk about skin tone and warm/cool colors this time around. I was born and raised in USA. I have always loved make-up but when I became older, I could never understand why the "pinks" recommended for women my age looked awful on me when they seemed to suit others just fine. It was not until I moved to Italy at age 54 that I finally figured it out when a consultant suggested a base with the word "honey" in the description and I absolutely loved what it did for my complexion. That could only mean I was always a warm-toned person and no wonder those blue pinks never looked good on me. Now when I wear only LFF warm-tone shades in every product, I can almost FEEL what the color is doing for me without even looking in the mirror. The difference in wearing wrong or right colors for your skin tone is truly amazing.

I love this. I've followed the work of Ari Seth Cohen for a while and have never failed to be inspired to take risks with my style It's even better to see you doing this on our streets in the U.K. Thank you !!!

      Hi Jacki
It was the work of Ari Seth Cohen which inspired our feature. I love the idea of celebrating those among us who refuse the 'cloak of invisibility' which we are expected to wear at a certain point in our lives. What I absolutely love is the confident poses and the 'joie de vivre' expressed by all the women that Bea captures with her camera. Triciax

Wow these women look fabulous, it is so uplifting to see a stylish older woman. Looking at them made me smile too. Well done ladies, I am with you all the way. I too try to be the whole package, make-up, hair, clothes. It certainly makes you feel confident. It is my birthday today, another year older, but that certainly will not be reflected in the way I present myself, I will continue to be a stylish older woman. Best wishes Tricia.

Hi. Happy Easter to you all. I just had to comment that I found this one of your best posts Tricia Being able to see all the styles that these lovely ladies wear and to tie it into your makeup is so useful. Please do more of these blogs as it helps so much to see how others of a similar age and colouring style things. I love your weekly posts and please keep up the good work ofgiving us makeup and style tips combined after all they go hand in hand. Best wishes. Margo

They all look lovely! I must tell you an astonishing story about your lipstick...while I have 3 of the "cool" colors, soft plum is my go-to color and I was quite dismayed when I lost it. Nothing in the States is equal to your products. Shortly thereafter, when unloading the washer, I heard a "thump" and out came my lipstick (hiding in pocket of blue jeans). Horrified, I tentatively opened the case. The lipstick was completely dry,, no damage at all! I had been dismayed about waiting for a new one to be shipped - but it's still perfect! Thank you, thank you...

  • Stella April 16, 2017 at 18:10

Love all the photos above and am impressed by the confident use of vibrant colours. I am a monochrome person and like classic styles but, now that Spring is here perhaps I will take a leaf out their books and 'go for it'

  • Francesca Dixon April 16, 2017 at 17:30

  • Mary April 16, 2017 at 14:55

  • Helen April 16, 2017 at 12:19

This blog is my favourite Sunday morning read! After years of looking for outfits that suit me, I have discovered that I needed more colour in my life. It makes a big difference whether it is a lipstick, scarf, outfit or all three! Keep writing!

  • Jane ALLAN April 16, 2017 at 10:32

Love Antonia's trouser - where did she get them? Since I wear glasses all the time, I wear designer (Schau Schau Vienna) glasses in a "hey look at me" shape and a warm orange colour which tones with my (out of a bottle) warm orange hair and clothes choices. I am alergic to beige and grey.........!!!
What do I think? Born in the 40s, with it in the 60s, career women in the 80s, cool and rock on (albeit in my case to Wagner, Mahler and Bruckner with Verdi thrown in) in the 10s.
A magazine is what we need: maybe on line but something that shows us how to be what we are......national treasures.

I absolutely love all the above photos. It is great to see how stylish you can look when you are a little bit more mature ! (I am 68 ) I notice that all your models are slim and tallish and as I am only 5ft 1in. and a little bit "rounder" in shape, I would love to see more photos of outfits to suit my shape. I love to put on my makeup and enjoy using different colourful accessories ,jewellery , sunglasses etc. and really enjoy reading your articles as they are so helpful.

  • Cath April 16, 2017 at 09:55

First things first...Happy Easter to you Trish and all the people who will be reading your blog this morning.
Again some lovely confident ladies showing style and radiance! Antonia looks so lovely ... and that scarf! What a great colour! Love Jo's overall look and a great bag and scarf....even the way she is standing....make her look good.
Accessories like bags, scarves and glasses make amazing impact. (As a glasses wearer I always wear coloured frames....my current ones are a red pair and a bright blue mottled pair! They are very much my 'accessories'.)
I keep looking at Cyndi's picture....simple outfit, colourful scarf, hair style that suits her....but what a smile!

    • Cath April 16, 2017 at 14:05

Forgive me Tricia....the auto-correct has decided to call you 'Trish'. (My iPad gets a bit over-familiar sometimes ?)

  • SueN April 16, 2017 at 09:52
