An interesting blog and certainly food for thought if shopping for a special occasion. Unfortunately from the prices indicated they would be unaffordable for me and I would think many others too for a special occasion outfit.

Unfortunately I would think the prices of the clothes shown are way beyond the pockets of most of us, particularly given that a really special occasion outfit wouldn’t be worn many times, and the hats perhaps never again - cost per wear = astronomic! And I would think renting an outfit for a special occasion would be a real lottery - it arrives a day or perhaps two beforehand and turns out not to suit/fit you, and you would spend the entire occasion feeling very uncomfortable in fear of staining or tearing it, for which you would be charged £££! Not to mention the anxiety of the build-up to the big day hoping the rented outfit will be ok and having no Plan B! Hope Tricia is ok and back soon.

Thank you for a very interesting read. Lots of good ideas. But “Occasion wear” - what a naff expression and so dated I think. The stores that specialise in those sort of outfits make me feel depressed. So often they make lazy assumptions about older women and churn out the same old look and the clothes are wearing the women and not the other way round.

Thanks for your thoughts. Personally I really don’t like the look of being dressed up and matched and accessorised to perfection. Even weddings nowadays are generally much more relaxed thank goodness.

Thank you for this lovely post! There were many tips on looking one’s best for a special occasion, especially the planning stage. I remember when I worked in a women’s clothing store and more than a few women would come in shortly before closing time for an outfit that they needed for a gala event that night!!
