Have you created a ‘bucket list’ - so named presumably because it’s everything you want to do before you kick the bucket? No, me neither. Not sure where my aversion comes from but maybe it’s the thought of parcelling the rest of my life up in specified goals and objectives to work through. I am all for life having direction and purpose as we get older but a ‘to-do’ list doesn’t do it for me.
My Reverse Bucket List

Having only recently discovered (and purely by chance,) come across your wonderful range of Look Fabulous Forever products. I am well and truly hooked. In fact , I have just placed my first order and cant wait for it to be delivered.
Now I have discovered your blogs and I am having a smashing time , sitting here with my laptop balanced on a cushion on my knee, my earphones firmly plugged in to drown the sound of the Television as my 83 year old husband dozes contentedly in his recliner chair whilst the nasal tones of an American bottle digger drone on and on and on...
Anyway...about this Bucket list; funnily enough, I too commented on this on
Facebook a few weeks ago. I was having a particularly trying day. My oven had just packed in. My husband was being more demanding than ever. (I am his carer). One of my wee dogs, I have five (Don`t ask!) had just piddled on my clean floor and I had a pile of ironing to do. Maybe it was this awful pandemic we`re all living through, that started me thinking about my life and where it was going and the fact that I was 77 years old, had reared a family of five girls and one boy , bringing them up in what has become known as the` Troubles` here in Belfast and here I was, a grandma of eight and I was still worrying about bloody ironing that needed doing and windows that needed cleaning. So , I decided there and then , that instead of having a bucket list, I would have a F~#~it list! So I did!
Which is why I am soooo enjoying your blogs/videos/ and chats. I fully intend to post some pics of the `New` me so watch this space!

As you say, the list could go on. .. and on but your reverse bucket list had me say YES over and over again and did make me smile! I'm sorry to say I still find mysself having to watch a film to the end to see but not as much as I use to do. I now simply fall asleep on the settee! thank you for the lovely blog. only a girl could understand.

Hi Tricia
Yes I agree with all of your list - I had resigned myself to the fact that I would have little chance of becoming a longed for Grandma and then in 2016 my beautiful Grandaughter decided to come into the world - 3 months early in my 70th year - an absolute joy and always will be.
Although not on the same subject - an article appeared in the Saturday Daily Telegraph on the 18th July written by Lisa Armstrong 'Welcome to the Seventies Camilla' - at last highlighting fashionable ladies in their seventies! I really enjoy Tea at the Ritz - thank you!

Dear Tricia, thank you for a very thought provoking article. I always look forward to your messages. I feel like I’m receiving a letter from a dear friend. This particular message was very timely as my husband & I are 77 and are facing many of your same issues. I can only image how difficult it is for you to give up your home in France.
Best to you,
Michele

I am never going to say “yes” to something again to be nice/helpful/ cooperative/agreeable/or because it’s somehow expected. If I don’t want to do something, eat something or go somewhere I say no. Pleasantly of course I’m not a grumpy old witch, just don’t want to spend time on things that don’t give me pleasure.

Brilliant and hilarious!! There are times when I miss all of my “past lives“ ,but then sense kicks in and I get over it! Every so often reality kicks me ,re getting older, the things I can no longer do easily etc. but again sense kicks in and I just accept those limitations and fine another way!
Thanks for a great blog......again!

Climb on to the roof of York Minster in high heels and a mini skirt only to discover I was afraid of heights!
Ride on any fairground rides, particularly dig dipper, mouse etc.
Get married again, even though I am fairly happily married.
Eat whelks and tripe the most disgusting food.
Ride on a motorbike even though I passed my test on one in 1972! It was an affordable means of getting to work. Once I got behind the wheel of a car, motorbike consigned to history.
Wear a mini skirt or hot pants, even though mine was the shortest when I was a teenager, sadly no longer have the legs for them.
Just like Tricia stop reading books if I’m not enjoying them, life is too short.

My migraines got so bad in my late 40s that I was finally referred to a specialist who literally changed my life. He suggested HRT and also put me on a daily tablet which I still. He also prescribed Zomig for that awful moment when I'd feel the migraine gathering. Again, I still have a Zomig with me at all times and they have saved me from so much distress and inconvenience and excruciating pain. Tx

I also still have four of the little, now food stained, cordon bleu recipe books but don’t do dinner parties - rather just share food with friends. I smiled at you adding Spanx to your list. I only once wore a very strong ‘panty girdle ‘ under a wedding outfit and had to remove it in the ladies toilet and stuff it in my handbag - the relief! My mother used to have her girdle fitted by a Playtex lady in her house - it was rubber (talcum powdered inside) with a zip at the side. She used to say an outfit would be fine “once I’ve got my good girdle on”. The torture women went through then! I have friends who have a list of all the far flung countries they must visit before they die. I’ve never had that list (apart from New York) and have always said I’d rather watch the video as I don’t enjoy the process of travelling. Agree with all the other points made especially the ones regarding being put down by men!

A great read Tricia. I can identify with a few of your points. One of mine would be not having to stand and wait for a bus in all weathers. Also not having to go out if I don't want to. There will be others if I think about it, but I'm just grateful I can live my life how I want to without having to answer to anybody.

I thoroughly enjoyed this feature, especially the migraine issue. I suffered exactly the same losing so many weekends spent in bed , in agony ,with a headache. The thought of HRT never entered my head...oh how i wush it had !

Tricia . Love your blog today . I am still on the trail of “ comfortable shoes” but love your reverse idea of matching outfit to footwear - will put that in place ASAP. Thank you for admitting you hate cooking , I have always felt guilty because I despise cooking ( love eating) and planning food meals on a daily basis - fortunately only my husband to feed now as my four children have flown the nest and have their own families to cater for ( 3 of them excellent cooks !) ... . Thank you for this Tricia. I really enjoyed reading your reverse bucket list. What a great idea. I,too, find putting together a bucket list quite depressing as I feel it has negative connotations. This was fun. I would add to the list sex without the worry of contraception is a plus. I discovered your website during lockdown and find your blogs really resonate with my thoughts and feelings. You write so well and with such positivity. I haven’t discovered your Super Troopers as I don’t do Facebook. After 40 years in education I am wary of the many pitfalls of using it so am reluctant to rejoin but who knows ..... ? Never say never. Keep writing. Thank you Tricia.

Yes!! I kept saying that with each non-bucket item I read. A mental tick went with each one. Oh the pay inequality! The treatment at work! - the constant striving to be as good as a man and maybe better than, if needed. And dashing back from a few weeks maternity leave to keep proving being a woman and a mum made no difference. I admit to never squeezing myself into Spanx but I wore similar garments of torture, with the same results. What would I add? I wish it could be not caring what other people thought about how I looked, but I still do, agonisingly, but I’m working on it!

I missed the post you’re talking about Tricia but agree with the majority of your list. Also, I now won’t accept poor service, sit in rush hour traffic, get up at a ridiculous hour in the morning 5 days a week or have to be in the company of people who like the sound of their own voice and don’t listen to others. Probably more but that’s what springs to mind.

How I laughed at the Cordon Bleu Cookery Collection. I too collected the full set and as far as I can remember I never cooked a single one of the recipes - it was just the thing to collect them

Hi Tricia. I too, commented on the reverse bucket list on fb. My 10 are in no particular order!
Number 1. My comment was to never go camping ever again. I went to Cornwall with my 1st husband, son who was a toddler think he was about 14/15 months old and with a couple of friends. It was the worst holiday of my life. We were nowhere near the toilet/shower block. I remember that I cried the first day! I had no idea how I was going to get through the week! I will never do that again, hotel or b and b for me.
Number 2, have a party at home, too much stress involved, I remember having one when I was much younger and I spent the whole time panicking that someone was going to be sick somewhere.
Number 3, lose my house again. I'm happily married for the 3rd time which I have to say I wasn't looking for. But after going through 2 divorces and having to start from scratch each time this house is completely and solely in my name.
Number 4, to not be pressured into cooking, I hate it with a vengeance, I told hubby right from the start of our relationship that I was never going to be the one to cook, luckily he is quite happy with his role in the kitchen! I wash up and I do enjoy baking.
Number 5. Go to one of my husbands choice of music gigs, he is into punk music! It's not music at all! I went to a couple of them early on in our relationship and I was miserable.
Number 6, hopefully never go through a pandemic again!
Number 7. If we move house then it will never have a shared access alleyway like this one does. I'm forever seeing people go through my garden and even though I have got used to it, I want my next garden to be private.
Number 8. Move house on my own! So stressful, I've done it twice now.
Number 9. Move house at Christmas! We, my 1st husband and 1st son actually moved on boxing day! Looking back I don't know how we did it.
Number 10. Work in a shop, I used to work for a well-known shop for a few years, I quite enjoyed the stock room and the cash office but hated the shop floor.
I could probably think of a few more things that I never want to do!
Thank you Tricia for all your support in the past few months.

Never having to do the soul destroying commute to work again.
As a former district nurse I had to brave the M25 every morning and evening with all the stress that entailed....would I get to my patients in time? Would my car make it through the snow and ice?
Never again the horror of being stuck in a logjam while time ticked away while my workload increased. Happy days!
I still work....but as a couple therapist.
I now have the luxury of working from home.
As I hear the traffic start to build after lockdown, and I have the luxury of beginning my day to suit myself I remember those stressful days....the baton has been passed to other younger people and I feel for them.

What a great idea, Tricia! Made me chuckle. You’re so right. We reach a stage when we realise there’s no point in doing something for the sake of it. I‘ve just read out some of your thoughts to my husband and he said, perhaps it should be called the “Life’s Too Short” list.

My reverse bucket list definitely includes meetings (meetings, bloody meetings as John Cleese put it), taking minutes and any kind of office bearing. Also those dreadfully artificial ‘drinks parties’ that involve standing making conversation with people you have nothing in common with.
Rising before dawn to commute to work is in there too!

Hi Tricia
I loved your blog today, and laughed out loud when you mentioned the weekly Cordon Bleu recipes! In actual fact, contrary to you, they actually inspired me and believe it or not I still use some of the recipes today, whether just for us or when we have friends round.
All the best.

I agree completely especially with numbers 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, the others don’t really apply to me. I’d add I really don’t need to keep in touch with people whose company I don’t enjoy, go on holiday if I don’t feel like it, put with poor service because it’s too much effort to complain and we british don’t. Complain away, it’s very cathartic
I have left so many theatre performances at half time if the show has been disappointing. My hubby and I give each other a look and don’t return to our seats. Liberating. I feel guilty about not finishing books but not that guilty that I read it whatever. Life is too short.
Just enjoy life in your way

Hi Tricia
Loved reading that... that could be me writing that as it mirrors mine ... you won’t believe it but just before I read this I’d got up, got my unused Spanx briefs out and tried on 3 dresses that have been hanging in wardrobe for at least 2 years .. only to put them back deciding that it was too much of a faff to wear all that underwear today at my family lunch
Well done for what you’ve written .. love reading your views.... your a real inspiration to me

My 10 reverse bucket list:
1. Catch a crowded commuter train into London
2. Be nice to people I do not like
3. Listen to people telling me what I think
4. Wear high heeled shoes: always agony and made me walk badly
5. Waste time arguing with diehard opinion holders; I just smile and walk away now
6. Feel the need to tag along, even if the outing is something I hate to do
7. Stop trying to ride a bike, to ski; I have no sense of balance but my men have never accepted that
8. Get up at 03.00 to drive north to present a workshop often to people who don't want to be there
9. Keep stuff "just in case". Declutter means chuck it...yea
10. Have to keep up to date as a chartered accountant; when I retired, I resigned.

Just read your reverse bucket list - early Sunday morning the sun is shining and what a great read. I haven't got a reverse bucket list as such but thoroughly enjoyed reading yours and agree with every point particularly the high heeled shoes. I will ponder today on things I will not have to do. Thanks Tricia you've cheered me up again.

I have never had a bucket list.
Here are a few for my reverse bucket list:
Never need to again apologise for watching the shopping channel. It is now the safe thing to do (shop online).
Wine o-clock is now 5pm, who can wait ‘til 6?
No longer hesitate to tell friends I love them. Life is too short to hold back.
No more guilt feelings when I treat myself; and
no more apologies for being barefoot when at home. My feet love me for it.

I loved your list. Too bad we had to enter our"winter" years to stop doing things we did not prefer.
1. Worry about what others thought about me.
2. Thinking somehow I didn't measure up.
3. Waiting for others or future outcomes to bring me happiness.
4. Most of Tricia's 10 reverse items.
I am 76 years young and love living in the moment. I wear makeup to please myself and enjoy my silver hair that started in my 20's. My two children have grown up to be my best friends!!
Can't ask for a better list than I have right now!!!

Definitely agree with the book and film argument. Life is too short to press on with a book I’m not enjoying. This is only a recent discovery for me and I feel quite absurdly liberated!

Hello Margaret, your comments resonated with me. I remember, too well, sitting around a boardroom table and being cut off and/or ignored by male counterparts. Re: corsets, my dear Aunt wore a rubber girdle that was perforated with many tiny holes. It had suspenders attached. My poor Auntie would shake talcum powder inside this garment before she pulled it on. She was always well dressed and wore makeup, but she must have endured agony sitting for hours at work, especially in warm weather.

Me too regarding worrying what other folks think. Just remember, they are probably doing exactly the same thing and are too wrapped up in their own insecurities to worry about you and me. That’s what I tell myself anyway!

Thanks again for a thought-provoking blog - you always seem to be thinking what other older people are exercised about too! The book one particularly resonated with me and it also applies to drama series on the box. The only exception is that I always finish the book for my book group and wish the others would as well. Otherwise, what's the point? I often find that a bit of effort when you don't get into it straight away yields great rewards.
I still wear heels for evenings and M&S shape wear as I like to wear fitted dresses. I find it perfectly comfortable for a few hours anyway but loo trips can be fraught!
I agree with another comment about staying away from meetings, minutes and being an 'officer'. Been there, done that many times before but no longer. Cooking is not my thing either so I do as little as possible.I can and do provide food but infrequently - I'd much rather go out.
Christmas without the family is something we did 3 years ago after my Mother died and a we had family split.I was very tired and very angry so it was what I needed then but not keen to repeat it.I never particularly wanted grandchildren and did not experience any great emotion or connection with them.I was 52 when the first was born and very much committed to my own life.I think I will enjoy them more and maybe be of more help to them now they are teenagers.
I used to do a lot of dressmaking but I'm no longer interested in it. I just mend or alter things now.I really want to be out and about while I still can.Roll on my next singing break in November!

One of the items on my 'reverse bucket list' is never again having to fume at having my comment/ suggestion ignored at a meeting, only to be repeated later by a man and applauded.
Another is never again having to eat everything on my plate just because it had been paid for - by me or someone else (this is probably because my parents lived through the 1930s Depression and WWII).
When I was at school (this would have been grammar school in the 1950s) me and my best friend made a solemn vow that neither of us would ever wear a corset (in those days, boned and with straps) and I never have (but I did wear suspender belts before tights were invented!)

What a great article Tricia. It certainly ticked my boxes. Thank you. I can't wait to read the others..

Love that. I am going to create one for myself.
ps: Thank you for giving us hope and courage to be true to ourselves. I say this because I am 76 and live in a Senior Apt for low income Srs people. Many do not wear makeup or dress up, or dream or do
anything but sit around and watch TV. I don't have the funds to do a lot of things, but I enjoy
getting dressed (the best I can) and wearing makeup, and coloring my hair; and getting out and about. . I get put down a lot by some, but happy to know there are many like me who want to still enjoy life.
I love your Facebook "Troopers".

A reverse bucket list ay? 1, Well I still love heels, but don't have the opportunity to wear them. 2, Still got my man after 54 years. 3, Didn't apply to me. 4, I agree wholeheartedly to that. 5. Won't be having any grandchildren, but love my nieces grandchildren. 6, I thank God for HRT, wouldn't be here now without it. I stopped after 15 years as my Dr advised me, otherwise I would still have it. 7, We used to have huge family Christmas's and I loved it. Now due to our circumstances we have it alone. I miss them though. 8, I didn't have big exams, but have a folder full of certificates for many, many courses I attended. One I did, they gave me and one other person a "Merit" I thought it was a consolation prize! I was Thrilled to know, I and she were the only ones out of 24 to have passed. 9, I loved having large family get togethers, more often than not with over 20 of us. Now an occasional visit to cook for. 10, My mother had me wearing a Playtex girdle when I was a size 10, she said I would never get fat if I wore one! I got married and never wore one again. Was she right about the fat? Well I did put on a lot of weight in middle years, it wouldn't have stopped that.
I'd add I don't have to answer to anyone and can speak my mind as I never used too. I won't put up with lack of service, I pay for it and I expect to receive what I pay for. I suppose I could add a few more, but the best is, I can get up when I like, at 6am or 9am as I want and love that.
Keep this blog going, you have very interesting and thought provoking subjects. Thank you

Being confident enough in my own skin With my grey hair and wrinkles to speak up if I don’t like anything, comment on unfairness, shoddy workmanship and bad manners! All the usual grumpy old woman stuff!!!

I may not “hate” cooking, but I surely don’t love it! Every now and then I get an urge, though definitely not gourmet. I decided long ago that I had one or two dishes I could cook well that served any company purpose, and that would be that.
No high heels ever again, for sure. I see younger women in them and want to tell them they will regret it. All kinds of foot issues at 76 that I can attribute to the wrong shoes. We do pay the price.
Love that you said that about your children “growing on you” - my term. And I have one granddaughter who gave me a second chance with babies and could have held her for days! She is also 12 and teaching me new things everyday.
I will never again dress in things that don’t suit me or that are for someone else’s taste. I have found what I like and I will stay with it.
I will also sort out where I stand about things by my own investigation. You are also entitled to do the same. And I won’t stop liking you because we disagree. I respect you and request you respect me. We all have work to do to make our own difference in the world.

I can identify with no's 1,2 4, 6,8,9 and 10. I never had children so no grandchildren and I don't regret not having children either. I was paid the same as male colleagues at work.
Another 'reverse' would be not spending Christmas with family as I inevitably end up in the kitchen sorting out the chaos, then they all drink too much and I don't.
