1. Look After Your Skin

A good skincare regime alongside a healthy diet and lots of water will really help to improve your skin’s condition.

This will create the best base you can have for applying your makeup. Always use a good cleanser to properly remove your makeup and the grime and pollution of the day. I love using a clean flannel wrung out in warm water to remove my cleanser as it also has a slight exfoliating effect.

Serums and moisturisers will keep your skin really well hydrated and a separate eye cream applied sparingly with your ring finger to the delicate eye area.

2. Consider Your Lighting

Where you apply your makeup can make all the difference to the end result.

Make sure you have a good level of daylight, ideally a window, in front of you and use the appropriate magnifying mirror for your eyesight to ensure the very best view while applying.

When you are applying your makeup don’t panic half way through eye application because you think it looks heavy or clownish.  It never looks right until everything is finished e.g. mascara, blusher and lipstick.

Be patient, blend and assess the finished look holding the mirror at arm’s length not just in front of you.

3. Primers Are Your Best Friend

Primers are my secret makeup weapon.

I absolutely adore the Smooth Like Silk Face Primer and use it every day AFTER my last skincare item but before makeup.

It will help to smooth and blur and fill fine lines and wrinkles so that when you put your foundation or Light Look Beauty Balm over the top it will go on smoothly, not sit in any lines and will last all day.

I also always use the Eye Primer but only a small amount on dry, oil-free eyelids, blended with a concealer brush and a clean finger. This is perfect for holding eyeshadow crease-free all day long.

4. Brushes Make All the Difference

Brushes! What can I say! It is definitely worth investing in a good brush set for life.

You should also clean them regularly ensuring that you do not splay out the bristles or the brushes will lose their shape.

When applying eye shadows, blend, blend and blend again for a really professional look. A foundation brush will buff in your foundation or beauty balm so it is completely unified with your skin. Lip brushes will ensure the perfect pout and a small wedge shaped brush is essential for creating a lovely, soft eyeliner effect with matte eyeshadow.

Brushes used properly can make all the difference.

5. Take Your Time

Give yourself enough time if you can so that makeup application becomes a joyous, creative experience rather than something scary and stressful.

Never rush mascara application as it will take you much longer to remove the smudges if you do it too fast!

Ensure a balance of colour between eyes, face and lips.

Experiment and remember if you try something different, especially a new lipstick, it will look very strange to you, especially if you have been wearing the same colour for ages. Enlist the advice of a trusted friend to get an objective opinion on a new colour.
